Simplicity and Contentment

Earlier this year, I traveled to the Solomon Islands. The smaller islands are sparsely populated with friendly natives who live there. At each island, they greeted us with a presentation that expresses their culture.

What I noticed was that the people lived a simple life. There were a few buildings made of concrete. No windows. No air conditioning. Often a family lives in a single, small home. There were also huts where they gathered as a community. The people were well fed, looking healthy and happy. One told me they live on the land, growing bananas, mangos, avocadoes, coconuts, nuts, and all kinds of fish. Rice is imported and is an everyday staple. They all looked content and peaceful.
What a difference from my country.
I appreciate my home with several rooms and air conditioning. More food options. More than one outfit in my closet. I gather my food from the farmer’s market and the grocery store. I appreciate the conveniences of a modern society. And yet I admire their happiness, strong community, and contentment. They do not worry about what they will eat or drink as God has provided for them.
I believe we can have that internal contentment when we practice simplicity and gratitude. For me, it starts with being grateful for the simple things in life. Like air conditioning (it’s hot here now in San Diego). Chocolate. Glass windows. A closet full of clothes. A small community. Family.
True contentment is wanting what you have. It is okay to want more but when we endlessly strive, hold a tight grip, try to control, or worry about the future, then peace and happiness cease to exist.
On a sheet of paper, make two columns. On the left side, list what you are discontent with. On the right side, list what you are content with.
Ask God for wisdom. With the discontentment, are there any steps to take to make a change? If these cannot change, can you accept these areas in your life while not taking it personally?
What can you simplify in your life or let go of, so you can have contentment?
Express gratitude for the things you are content with. Choose to dwell here.
God takes care of the birds in the air and the lilies in the fields. He provides for the native people in the Solomon Islands. He takes care of me.
And He will take care of you.
