Joy is more than just a feeling; it’s a deep-rooted attitude that all will work out for good for those who love God. As we explore the scriptures, joy can be found in many aspects of our lives. Whether it’s through worship, nature, community, or even trials, the Bible has beautiful verses that remind us to choose joy.
“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” – John 15:11
Jesus is talking about how much He loves his disciples and encourages them to remain in His love and do what God asks of them. He also tells them to love one another or treat others as they want to be treated. Then their joy will be complete. This scripture is for us, too.
I remain in God’s love by reflecting daily how I experienced his love for me. A kind text. A hug. Words of encouragement. Wisdom and insight from the scriptures. Lessons from nature.
During this month, I am choosing to practice joy each day. It could be meditating on the above verse or watching a positive You Tube clip or T.V. show. Or it may be going to places that bring joy. One is the San Diego Safari Park. The above picture shows some kangaroos with their joeys. Seeing those little ears pop out of the mother’s pouch made me smile.
The gorillas have a new silverback. Joann, a female gorilla, adores him. The two of them are displaying gorilla-flirting behavior. She will hit his arm and run away. Or will stare at him until he notices her. The hope is that new baby gorillas will come.
What was the most joyful to me is sharing this with my daughter and her boyfriend. They are such a delight to be with.
Perhaps you are grieving or feeling lonely. I hear you. Remain in God’s love during this time.
Try holding both sadness and joy together.
Here is a suggestion on practicing joy this month.
Take 4 pieces of paper.
On one, label it: What brings joy to my mind. List any thoughts, meditations, positive memories, truths about you, and accomplishments.
On the second sheet, label it: What brings joy to my soul. List scriptures, nature, service, sacraments, and rituals that connect you deeply with God.
On the third sheet: What brings joy to my body. Massage, warm bubble bath, exercise, stretching, Havening Technique (google it), savoring a favorite Christmas goodie.
On the fourth sheet: What activity brings me joy. The zoo, Christmas lights, musicals, plays, watching a good movie, gathering with family and friends.
Decide each day to practice one or two of these on your lists.
Each evening, reflect in prayer on what brought you joy today.
Invite God to dwell with you in this place of joy.Journal your experiences. Writing it down, reflecting, and savoring will help your joy be complete.
