Accompanying Survivors of Sexual Trauma

One out of four women and one out of seven men will experience some form of sexual trauma in their lives. With the rise of the #MeToo movement and sexual abuse reports in the media, more survivors are stepping out and sharing their story. Whether your role is a priest, pastor, ministry leader, spiritual director, mentor, friend or family member, you may be the one they want to talk about it with.

Joe and Anne will share their personal story of childhood molestation and healing. In this workshop, you will learn insights on how to accompany a survivor of sexual trauma. Specific topics will include: common manifestations, what to say and what not to say, compassionate listening, open-ended questions, and some spiritual practices that heal. You will be able to participate in a healing ritual and de-brief your experience in a small group.

Many survivors comment on the hurtful things people say to them, especially within the church. Although not intentional, we believe most people do not know what to say or do.

This workshop will help you learn how to encourage one to move from a place of hurt to a place of healing.
